This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Sylvana Tomaselli’s seminal article for History Workshop Journal, ‘The Enlightenment Debate on Women’. You are warmly invited to a colloquium intended to celebrate and reflect on her many important contributions to the study of eighteenth-century intellectual history in the years since.
The event will take place in the Palmerston Room (Fisher Building), St John's College on Monday 28 April, from 13.00-19.00 pm. A drinks reception will follow, which all are welcome to attend
Three panels will discuss major themes in Tomaselli's works and the contributions she has made to the study of eighteenth-century political thought and intellectual life, with particular attention to her transformative studies of the eighteenth-century debate on the condition of women, and of the thought of Mary Wollstonecraft. Panellists include Susan James (Birkbeck), Richard Bourke (Cambridge), Ruth Scurr (Cambridge), Tom Hopkins (Cambridge), Biancamaria Fontana (Lausanne) and John Robertson (Cambridge/St Andrews). Each panel will be followed by questions and discussion.
