Raymond Aron and the Renewal of French Democratic Thought

Recognised as one of the most astute observer of the second half of the twentieth century, Raymond Aron’s interests reached far beyond political commentary, encompassing the philosophy of history, sociology, democratic theory and liberalism. On 21 May over 30 scholars from across the world congregated for a one-day workshop in CRASSH to debate the different aspects of his thought, which offer an insight into his political judgement. Lead by an exchange between members of the Centre Raymond Aron in Paris and postdocs from the Faculty of History, 7 papers were presented and discussed, and will serve as the basis for a special issue under discussion with the History of European Ideas.
